Women’s T20 World Cup 2026: Groups, Teams & Format Explained

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 is back to a simple, fan-friendly format. Twelve teams. Two groups of six. Round-robin within each group. Top two from each progress to the semi-finals. Funexchange has loaded markets for every group game and every knockout, with 2% commission and the rest of the pricing model that has helped settle over ₹141 crore for our users so far.

This guide walks through the qualified teams, the group split, how the format actually plays out, and what India’s path to the final at Lord’s could look like.

The 12 Qualified Teams

Direct entries and the qualifier path.

Six teams qualified directly off the back of the 2024 edition: hosts England, plus 2024’s top five finishers Australia, India, New Zealand, South Africa and West Indies. Pakistan and Sri Lanka took the next two via the ICC T20I rankings cut-off. The final four spots came through the global qualifier in February 2026: Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherlands and Scotland. Netherlands qualify for a Women’s T20 World Cup for the first time in their history.

Group 1 At a Glance

The tougher half on paper.

Group 1 reads: Australia, India, South Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Netherlands. Three former finalists in one pool. Australia are the defending Group 1 favourites and the all-time T20 World Cup champions with six titles. India are second favourites. South Africa lost the 2024 final to New Zealand, so they enter with a point to prove. Pakistan are a wild card. Bangladesh and Netherlands round out the group.

Group 2 At a Glance

Home advantage and the holders.

Group 2 reads: England, New Zealand, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Scotland. Hosts England open the tournament against Sri Lanka. Defending champions New Zealand are the standout side, even if they look slightly less star-studded than the Australia or India squads. Ireland and Scotland are the underdogs; both are at a Women’s T20 World Cup for the first time in years.

The Round-Robin Format Explained

Five games each in the group stage.

Every team plays the other five in their group exactly once. Two points for a win, one for a no-result, zero for a loss. If teams finish level on points, net run rate is the tie-breaker, then head-to-head if NRR is also tied. The top two from each group then enter the knockout phase.

How the Knockouts Work

Two semis, one final.

Stage Date Venue Match-up
Semi-final 1 30 June The Oval, London Group 1 winner v Group 2 runner-up
Semi-final 2 2 July The Oval, London Group 2 winner v Group 1 runner-up
Final 5 July Lord’s, London Semi-final winners

There is no Super Six. There is no second round-robin. Win or lose, your tournament is settled by 28 June if you fail to make the top two. Worth knowing for anyone betting on outrights via our cricket markets.

India’s Likely Path to the Final

Three steps. Each one harder than the last.

If India finish top of Group 1, they probably meet England in the first semi-final on 30 June. If they finish second, they probably meet New Zealand on 2 July. Either route ends at Lord’s on 5 July. The dream is an India v Australia final, but Australia would need to come second in Group 1 for that to happen on the bracket. More likely you get a New Zealand or England title clash.

What the Format Means for India

Margins matter from day one.

With only five group games and no margin for serial slip-ups, every match counts. Lose two and you are out unless your NRR is huge. India cannot afford a sloppy day against Bangladesh or Netherlands. Realistically they need four wins out of five to stay safe. A 3-2 record could still squeak through, but only if South Africa and Pakistan finish below them on net run rate.

Defending Champions and Recent History

New Zealand are champions. Australia are still the benchmark.

New Zealand won the 2024 final in Dubai by beating South Africa by 32 runs. Amelia Kerr was Player of the Tournament with 15 wickets and 135 runs. Australia have won six of the previous nine editions. England won 2009. West Indies took the 2016 title. India have never lifted the trophy. The 2026 edition is a chance to fix that.

Funexchange Markets for the Format

Outrights, group winners, top run-scorer, top wicket-taker and top India player are already live. Group winner markets are usually the best-priced early because two or three teams credibly compete for top spot in each pool. Our 52-second WhatsApp response time is there if you need help finding a market. New users may want to skim our Funexchange vs Mahadev Book comparison before placing a first bet.
